The Great Ocean Road is among the top 10 scenic roads in the world.
We provide a one day and a two day tour. Regardless of whichever tour you take you will
marvel at the sights seen along the way.
From Melbourne you travel to the city of Geelong, which is
Victoria's second largest city. Continuing along the Princes Highway towards Colac we will
pass through many of the farming communities the area is famous for. After Colac we drive
through some beautiful mountain country to the township of Lavers Hill where we commence
the descent down the Otway ranges. We have now picked up the western end of the Great
Ocean Road.
It is only a short journey now till we see the start of the
'Twelve Apostles'.
These giant features appear to rise out of the wild seas of
the Southern Ocean.
Many an old sailing ship has ended its days along this coastline, the most
famous of these 25 wrecks is the 'Loch Ard' which went down with all but two persons. You
will visit Loch Ard Gorge, where the two survivors, a young female passenger and a ships
boy, were washed ashore. Visit the graveyard where the passengers and crew are buried,
Marvel at 'London Bridge' and the other 'apostles'.
Due to the length of the day's travel it is necessary to return
to Melbourne over the same route as our outward journey however we will point out points
of interest along the way.
Day one of our two day tour commences with us departing
Melbourne and travelling to Geelong and then on through Ocean Grove, a pretty beachside
village, and onto the 'Great Ocean Road'. The Great Ocean Road, built by returned
servicemen after world war one, takes you on an unforgettable tour through some of the
world's best coastal, bush and hinterland scenery.
The well-made road mostly hugs the coast, connecting Geelong to
Nelson near the South Australian border. From serene bays and inlets to rugged cliffs and
huge rocky outcrops, the coast will captivate and surprise you with its diversity. You
will travel through lovely seaside holiday towns such as Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne and
Apollo Bay. At Apollo Bay we travel inland to Lavers Hill and down again to the coast. We
are now treated to one of the world's wonders as we visit the 12 Apostles, London Bridge,
Loch Ard Gorge etc.
We then drive onto our overnight stop, Warrnambool. We will
still have time to visit the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. This museum recreates the
atmosphere of a 19th century coastal port with restored ships and streetscapes.
Warrnambool is a bright bustling metropolis which is the service and retail center for the
region and has all the major facilities, entertainment and accommodation.
Day two of our tour starts straight after breakfast with a
short drive to the unique fishing village of Port Fairy which is one of Victoria's
earliest ports and many of the homes and other buildings of the last century are
preserved. In fact, more than 50 are classified by the National Trust.
Whalers and sealers first settled the area in the early 1800s,
followed by the Irish immigrants escaping the potato famine. Today Port Fairy's fishing
fleet harvests crayfish and abalone. Time is allowed for a walk along the wharf on the
pretty Moyne River. You will then be taken on an historic drive through Port Fairy's
streets and you will see the charming fully restored cottages built by whalers and seamen.
Next we drive on to the local volcano Tower Hill. Tower Hill was formed 25,000 years ago
when hot rising magma came into contact with the underground water table. A violent
explosion followed creating a funnel-shaped crater and the island seen in the lake today.
Now a nature reserve it is a haven for native birds and animals.
Unfortunately time to start our return journey to Melbourne.
This time we travel via Highway 1, the Princes Highway, which completely circles the
Australian coast from Melbourne to Melbourne.
