Castlemaine is famous for a lot of things and is well worth a
visit. The 'great' explorer Robert O'Hara Burke was the Police Inspector in Castlemaine
just prior to his fateful expedition to the gulf. His home 'Broadoaks' still stands on the
edge of Camp Reserve. "XXXX" was first brewed in the town that gave it its name,
although leaving for warmer climates following the great brewery amalgamations of 1887.
The candy 'Castlemaine Rock' is still manufactured in town. Lola Montes opened the
Castlemaine Theatre with her rousing performance of her 'spider dance' in 1855.
